Morgan & Mees
An 1880 corner building with nine rooms above and a kitchen that opens at 8:00 every day, ten minutes from the Jordaan and nowhere near the crowds.
Morgan & Mees is a nine-room boutique hotel in a restored 1880 monumental building on the corner of the Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat, and its ground floor is one of the better weekday breakfast rooms in west Amsterdam. The design keeps the original woodwork, mouldings and floors and layers modern furniture and abstract art over them, which produces a room that is comfortable without being soft, and quiet at eight in the morning because the neighbourhood is residential and the hotel is small. The breakfast card is short and priced like a restaurant rather than a hotel: eggs royal with smoked salmon, hollandaise and wild spinach at 16, avocado toast with two poached eggs and chilli oil at 15, scrambled eggs with sourdough and bacon at 14, and an easy breakfast of a boiled egg, brioche and Comte at 8 for anyone who came to talk rather than eat. There is a covered terrace for the mornings that allow it. They take group bookings and meetings from ten people up by email, which tells you what the room is used for. The Rotterdam sister hotel is a separate operation, this is the only Amsterdam address.
Kitchen open from 8:00 daily, closing 18:00 Sunday to Tuesday, 22:00 Wednesday and Thursday, 23:00 Friday and Saturday. Book a table through their site for a morning meeting, and mail ahead for anything above ten people.
