IJs van Oost
The Javastraat's own daily-made scoop shop, priced like the neighborhood still belongs to the neighborhood.
No Italian origin story here, just a small Javastraat shop that makes everything fresh each morning with actual fruit, actual juice, vanilla pods and dairy, and sells it at prices that feel smuggled in from 2015: two scoops still slide under four euros. The Indische Buurt has adopted it completely, which you can measure by the stamp cards in every wallet on the street and by oost-online, the neighborhood paper, scoring it a 9 plus in its ice tour of Oost and calling the vanilla heavenly, round and creamy. The strawberry tastes like the fruit rather than the syrup, the caramel sea salt does brisk trade, and the rotating case rewards repeat visits, which is the entire business model. It is a pure counter operation, daytime into evening, no seats to speak of, made for eating on the walk to Flevopark. Oost finally has a scoop worth defending in arguments.
Take the stamp card seriously: a full card is a free scoop, and at these prices it fills fast. The vanilla is the honest test of the place, order it at least once.
