Café-Restaurant Amsterdam

Brasserie classics in the engine room of a 1900 pumping station, with one diesel engine still standing and floodlights from two old football stadiums.

From 1900 to 1996, four pumps in this engine room pushed dune water from Vogelenzang into Amsterdam. The Machinepompgebouw, a national monument begun in 1897, stands on the former water company grounds beside the Westergasfabriek. Café-Restaurant Amsterdam moved into the engine room on 20 December 1996 and kept one of the two 1940 backup diesel engines in place; 22 floodlights from the old Ajax stadium De Meer and the Olympic Stadium light the room. The kitchen is a French-Dutch brasserie: baguettes and croques at lunch, steak frites from €18.50 at night. That evening card also lists oeufs durs mayonnaise at €4.80 and 30 grams of caviar at €60.50. Gault&Millau gives it 12 out of 20 for "recognizable classics, executed cleanly and correctly". Time Out's Karin Engelbrecht ranks it 11th among the city's best restaurants in 2026, a locals' favourite for mixed generations and picky eaters. The Entree Awards named it Best All Day Classic in 2023.

Online booking covers up to six people; groups of 7 to 15 book by phone on 020 682 2666, and it is card only, no cash. Tram 5 and bus 21 stop about 100 metres away.
