Flo's Deli Bakery
The first hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagels in Amsterdam, and a Cinnamon Crunch bagel they bake on Saturday and Sunday only.
Flo's opened on Jan Pieter Heijestraat in 2019 as Flo's Appetizing, offering what nobody in the city was doing properly: bagels rolled by hand, slow-fermented for 36 hours, boiled and then baked, on organically farmed flour milled at Santpoort. It now trades as Flo's Deli Bakery, and the appetizing counter behind it is the real draw, with salmon, pastrami, brisket and schmears from Frank's Smokehouse. The Jerry is the benchmark at 10.95 euros, smoked salmon with scallion-chive schmear, tomato, onion and capers, and there is a carrot-lox vegan version at the same price; The Newman does pastrami, melted cheese, sauerkraut and mustard-mayo for 10.95; a Sabich comes in at 8.75 and a plain bagel at 2.50, or 12.50 for the half dozen. The weekend is when the bakery shows off: the Cinnamon Crunch bagel and the five euro cinnamon bun are Saturday and Sunday only, challah is a Friday thing, and the doors stay open an hour later than on weekdays. Two things to weigh before you plan a morning around it. This is a counter with a handful of seats and a patio, not a dining room, so at the weekend the queue runs out onto the street and the good bakes go early. And there is a second site on Utrechtsestraat; the Oud-West original is the one with the history and the better room.
Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 16:00, closed Monday, Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 15:00. No bookings. Go before 11:00 at the weekend or the Cinnamon Crunch bagels and the cinnamon buns will be gone. Order The Jerry at 10.95 euros and a cinnamon bun at 5.
