Eetcafé Van Beeren
The De Reiger crew's third brown café, reopened spring 2026 with three courses for about 30 euro and a hidden courtyard.
Van Beeren is named after Gerrit van Beeren, the greengrocer whose shop stood on this Koningsstraat corner from 1936, and for decades it was the Nieuwmarkt's squatter-and-student eetcafé with a courtyard garden nobody expected. In spring 2026 it changed hands to Xander Waller, Jasper Gottlieb, Wout Meulemans and Fons Lagendijk, the team behind Proeflokaal De Druif and the revived Café de Reiger, with Xavier Berben as fifth partner, and reopened with a rebuilt but recognisable room: wood panelling, candlelit tables, bar seating, the garden intact and served until 22:00. The card is deliberately short and Mediterranean: sardine escabeche at 10, lentil soup at 6.50, melanzane at 14, merguez at 15, a lamb brochette at 18, half a chicken at 19.50, a plancha entrecôte at 26 and a fish of the day at 23, so three courses land around 30 euro as promised. AmsterdamNow covered the reopening in April 2026 and Broersma's 2026 openings list picked it out for its affordability. It is too new for a settled verdict, but the pedigree is the best in the brown-café business right now and the courtyard alone is worth the detour from the Nieuwmarkt terraces.
Open daily 16:00 to 01:00, kitchen from 17:00, courtyard until 22:00. Part of the room is always kept for walk-ins; early or late gets you the bar. Order the escabeche, the merguez and whatever fish came in.
